YouTube and Vimeo are the two most popular video hosting platforms. While YouTube doesn’t require you to log in to watch videos hosted on the site, Vimeo does require you to sign up to watch HD content on their platform. It is still trendy among users, and many creators place their videos on the platform.

Some Windows 10 users have reported that Vimeo Videos don’t play on their device when they open a site from Google Chrome. Here I will discuss how you can decide if the videos won’t play on Chrome.

How to Solve Vimeo Videos Not Playing on Windows 10?

You may see one of the following errors in Chrome:

  • Videos won’t load
  • Video shows blank
  • Gray box appears instead of video
  • Chrome freezes or crashes when downloading a video

This can be annoying as you may be missing out on some important content on your device. Here are some of the easy methods to try to resolve Chrome video not playing errors.

Solution 1. Check your network connection

Often users encounter this error due to an unstable network. If your network connection is disconnected halfway through, the video may not load, and you will see videos not playing on your device.

First, try opening the webpage in a different browser. If the webpage doesn’t load in other browsers, there might be an error connecting to the Internet.

In almost all networks, there is a waiting period after which connectivity decreases with prolonged use. Reboot the router and put your device in Airplane mode and back again, reboot the network, and the gas should be turned off. This will clear the network errors, and you will fix the Google Chrome error.

On Windows, you can also try clearing the DNS cache. To do this:

  1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, open the Run window by clicking Win + R. Type CMD and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to start the command prompt with administrator rights.
  2. Type the following command to clear the DNS cache:
    ipconfig / flushdns
  3. Wait for the confirmation message and try to load your web pages again.

Solution 2: Allow Flash on the site

Even though Adobe Flash is gradually being reduced, many sites still need flash memory for the proper functioning of the site. If you see a “Click to turn on Adobe Flash Player” error message, your website might need Flash playback permission to play the video.

  1. On your computer, open Google Chrome.
  2. Visit the Vimeo page of the video you want to play.
  3. To the left of the web address, click Lock or Info
  4. To the right of ‘Flash‘, click arrows is present next to the setting.
If you don’t see the Flash option, click on Site Settings.
  5. Find Flash from the list of available site settings.
  6. select Always allow on this site.
  7. In the left upper corner click on the Reload button or press F5 to reload the site.

If incorrect resolutions caused your Video Vimeo playback error for flash memory, now it should be fixed.

Solution 3. Check for any broken extensions

If you’ve confirmed that only Chrome can’t play videos from Vimeo, some broken extensions might be causing an error on your device.

To check if this is the case, open the video with an error when using Incognito View Mode. Start the incognito window by right-clicking the icon on the taskbar and selecting New Incognito Window.

Now try to access the page using the Incognito window. If the page generally loads in incognito mode, some broken extension on your device is causing this error.

Extensions are disabled by default in this mode, and you can confirm that a broken extension caused the error if you no longer encounter this error in incognito mode.

Start by enabling the extensions one by one and see if the error persists.

Solution 4: Switch hardware acceleration

When enabled, hardware acceleration uses computer hardware specifically designed to perform certain functions more efficiently than in software running on a general-purpose CPU.

If hardware is used to smooth performance, confusing resources can create compatibility issues and cause a video not to play in Chrome error.

Note: After disabling hardware acceleration, you may experience increased CPU usage and other system resources. This is natural and shouldn’t bother me much. If you see a drastic change, you can turn it back on.

Follow these steps to disable hardware acceleration in Chrome:

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Press the hamburger menu (≡).
  3. Select settings.
  4. Scroll down and click Advanced
  5. Under System, locate Hardware Acceleration.
  6. Turn the toggle switch side off next to “Use hardware acceleration when available.”

Solution 5: Clear Chrome data

The cache is data stored on your device by various websites to download data from them faster the next time a website loads. However, sometimes mismatched cache data can cause all sorts of errors, which is one of them. To resolve your Chrome does not load page error; Clear all Google Chrome data, such as cookies, cached images, and files.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete in a new tab to clear Google Chrome data to open the Clear Browsing Data dialog box. Here, select All Time from the Time range drop-down menu. Then select Clear Data.

Solution 6. Reinstall Google Chrome

If all other solutions don’t work, try reinstalling Chrome as a last resort. The new installation will reset all corrupted files and settings and regenerate the data libraries.

  • Uninstall the Chrome app from your control panel. Then also delete the remaining files. To delete the remaining files, you can use a third-party junk file cleaner such as CCleaner.
  • Then download a fresh copy of the installer from the Google website (link) and run the installer.
  • Wait for the installer to finish.

Now check to see if the problem persists.
